July 12, 2022

At the beginning of the summer of 2021, at the start of the tourist season, travelers were offered a new and exciting route through the military heritage sites in Estonia and Latvia. The Kurzeme Planning Region together with partners within the project "Military Heritage" collected information about museums, fortifications, military equipment, trails, bunkers, battle sites, military towns, infrastructure, and memorial sites and created a Military Heritage Tourism brochure and map.

"There is much in common in the history of Latvia and Estonia, starting with joint struggles for independence, through both world wars, and Soviet times, when we were the western border of the "Iron Curtain". In order to preserve this history and stories, many places of military heritage are currently adapted for tourism, offering modern expositions and exciting stories", informed the head of the military heritage project of the Kurzeme planning region.

Tourism brochures and maps with 150 objects of military heritage in Estonia and Latvia have been published in 5 languages (Latvian, English, Estonian, German and Russian), they can be downloaded at https://militaryheritagetourism.info/lv/info/publications. On the other hand, maps and brochures in paper format can be obtained free of charge at Kurzeme tourist information centers, at tourist information providers in several municipalities, as well as at most military heritage tourist facilities.
