Maser flare follow-up observations: radio, (sub)mm and infrared

January 8th, 2024, 11:00 - 12:00, D407 and online

The M2O (Maser Monitoring Organisation) has identified and pursued follow-up observations of 14 maser flare events since 2017. Some of these events lead to the discovery of extremely exciting phenomena with rapid evolution of the structure and physical properties of the progenitor, from radio through infrared. Conversely, some events exhibited no noticeable changes in any emission other than the brightening of one single maser feature, at one single wavelength.

In this presentation examples of what has recently been observed in the follow-up observations of maser flares will be discussed, drawing on data taken at various wavelengths.

Speaker details:

Ross is a radio astronomer working with the IVARS project. He got his MSci (masters of science) in Astrophysics in his hometown of Cardiff University, Wales, and PhD in Kagoshima University, Japan. His main field of research is the formation of massive stars using radio astronomy observations, focusing on maser emission and the VLBI technique.
