Name of the Project: RADIONET-4 – Perspective Radio Astronomy in Europe-4
Project No. 730562
Project Acronym: RadNet4
Funded by:
RADIONET is a European Union project designed to promote the development and integration of Europe’s largest radio telescope infrastructure.
The main objectives of the project are to promote the development of radio astronomy in Europe, increase the capacity of major radio telescopes for excellent research and ensure that radio astronomers in Europe and the rest of the world have access to these tools. Funding is provided for the modernisation and upgrading of telescopes, observations on the European Extra Large Base Interferometry Network (EVN), and staff mobility. The EU project RADIONET has been running since 2004, and the VIRAC has been participating since 2006.
28 partner organisations will participate in the HORIZON-2020 RADIONET4 project, including Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Institute of Engineering Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre (hereinafter – VIRAC).
Project Submitter: Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, Germany
Scientific Supervisor of the Project: Dr. phys. Ivars Šmelds
Project Duration: 1/1/2017–31/12/2020 (48 months, 3 report periods)
The Aim of the Project: Within the framework of the project, VIRAC will participate in the development of a new generation radio receiver, joint observations of the EVN network and other project activities.
Main Activities of the Project: Transnational activities (TA): to support access for researchers from other countries to the largest European radio telescopes, including the European Interferometry Network EVN.
Networking Activities: external relations (conferences, forums, etc.), training, EVN standardisation Joint Research Activities: development of new hardware
Joint Research Activities: development of new hardware
The projects replace each other and the activities, mostly (except for the development of new hardware), move from one project to another (next) RADIONET-4 together with VIRAC is attended by a total of 25 participants
