About project KPI

Development of a Prototype of a Mobile Hydrogen Hydraulic Compression and Filling Complex (KPI)

Project Identification No. KC-PI-2020/35

The project is implemented within the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Operational Programme ‘1.2.1 Specific Support Objective ‘Increase Private Sector Investment in R&D’ within 1.2.1.2 Measure ‘Support for the Improvement of the Technology Transfer System’.

Project Duration: 1/4.2020–30/9/2020
Project Funding- Total costs are EUR 27,768.98 and they are financed from the following sources:
ERDF – EUR 24,992.07,
Ventspils University of Applied Sciences – EUR 2,776.90.

The main aim of the project is the research and development of universally complex technologies for the production of gaseous fuels to increase the share of biogas in total energy consumption in order to reduce the total air pollution in the country. The specific objective of the project is to research and develop a new mobile complex for the compression, storage and supply of gaseous biofuels, which can significantly increase biogas demand and economic efficiency, promoting and encouraging project target groups to move towards sustainable economic and social development. energy.

In the first stage of the project, it is planned to perform a feasibility study and development of a commercialization strategy. These activities are planned for six months, within which following is planned:

1. Systematization of previous research results.
2. In-depth evaluation of the application of the developed technology.
3. Analysis of material and technical resources for bringing the technology to the TRL7 (8) stage.
4. Identification of external experts.
5. Drafting of commercialization strategy.
6. Indicative price evaluators of the final product, based on the products in the technological solution and the market.
7. Preliminary activity plan to be implemented within the project. The plan will be updated after the development of the TEC and the commercialization strategy.

The following tasks shall be solved during the project implementation:

  1. Selection of a hydrogen gas compatible fluid that can be used as a working fluid for hydrogen compression
  2. Investigation of equipment temperature regime changes during gas compression
  3. Investigation of the pressure increase intensity depending on the operating mode of the hydraulic pump
  4.  4. Determination of power and energy consumption for compression of a certain volume of gas
  5. Selection of materials for the production of compressors and tanks for the storage of compressed hydrogen with a high degree of compression 35 – 0 MPa
