The first half-year of the project “Smart complex of information systems of specialized biology lexis for the research and preservation of linguistic diversity” implementation has passed

June 30, 2021

The project “Smart complex of information systems of specialized biology lexis for the research and preservation of linguistic diversity” is implemented by researchers of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) Faculty of Translation Studies and researchers and programmers of the Faculty of Information Technology in cooperation with researchers of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies derived public person “Institute of Horticulture”. Regular meetings of project partners are still ongoing to discuss current issues and plan future work.

During the first six months of the project, tasks related to the prototyping and development of open-access interactive multi-functional database-management system (hereinafter – IMDS) have been performed. In the first half of the year, a data entry and management module was developed that allows researchers to enter terms, organism names and plant variety names from various publications, including dictionaries, and link them to relevant bibliographic sources. To ensure IMDS speed during execution, the designed system consists of two parts – a back-end system developed using the Spring Framework and a front-end system developed using React technology. The next months of the project will be dedicated to the development of IMDS tests, as well as the analysis of the collected data based on the developed statistical module.

On May 14, project manager Silga Sviķe with the paper “Use of dictionaries in second and third foreign language acquisition – learning strategy” participated in Liepaja University organized XVIII International Scientific Conference “Language acquisition: problems and perspectives”, which this year was online. The conference presented a learning strategy developed and approved in the research – working with dictionaries – which is useful not only for learning foreign languages, but also for studying at university. Work is currently going on to prepare a scientific publication. From May 30 to June 2, S. Sviķe participated in the online “Summer School for Literary Studies & Digital Humanities” organized by Leiden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands. Participation in summer school is a good opportunity to enrich knowledge about the use of various programs, such as visone, Python, in humanities data research. What has been learned in the summer school seminars will be useful in the analysis of the data collected in the project.

The research is implemented by the Latvian Council of Science Fundamental and Applied Research Project No. lzp-2020 / 1-0179 “Smart complex of information systems of specialized biology lexis for the research and preservation of linguistic diversity”.
