VIRAC leading researcher attends The workshop on the International Space Weather Initiative: The Sun, Space Weather and Geosphere

January 17, 2023

On the 1st of November, 2022 Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center (VIRAC) leading researcher PhD Dmitrijs Bezrukovs  remotely attended “The workshop on the International Space Weather Initiative: The Sun, Space Weather and Geosphere”. During the workshop he presented a report on the topic of “Microwave observations of the Sun with VIRAC RT-32 Radio Telescope”.

The event, which was jointly organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the Baku State University in Baku, Azerbaijan, took place from the 31st of October until the 4th of November. A notable number of researchers from all around the world were invited to introduce the participants with their findings and research regarding the space weather in that way discussing its importance, drawing attention to its influence on Earth and highlighting the latest developments and observations.

VIRAC leading researcher Dmitrijs Bezrukovs informed the participants about the main areas of VIRAC and about spectral polarimetric observations of the Sun by the (VIRAC) radio telescope (RT-32). The main conclusions he drew were that VIRAC has all the possibilities to provide microwave spectral polarimetric observations of the Sun with the multichannel spectral polarimeter at 3.2-4.7 cm and 2.1-7.4 cm wavelength ranges for numerous solar physics problems and that the newly developed spectral polarimeter with expanded wavelength range, enhanced noise parameters and dynamic range is able to clearly and reliably observe areas of reduced brightness temperatures (“Low Temperature Regions” - LTR) and study coronal holes and coronal hole-like structures.
